Haiku, Maui: A Northshore Gem
Haiku, Maui, is located on the Northshore of the island. It’s a beautiful, laid-back community known for its lush tropical landscapes and gentle, soft rains that keep everything green, creating an idyllic island lifestyle. Here’s a look at life in Haiku, Maui.
Surfing and Windsurfing Paradise
One of the biggest draws of living in Haiku is windsurfing and surfing on Maui’s Northshore. Ho’okipa Beach Park is renowned as one of the world’s best spots for windsurfing and surfing. We’ve already had two major Northshore swells this season. I was stoked to catch a few mornings surfing the outer reef at Kanaha.
Locals and watermen from Europe, Japan, and Brazil gather at Ho’okipa to experience epic windsurfing and surfing days. My sons and granddaughters are regulars at Ho’okipa, taking advantage of every swell.
Pe‘ahi (Jaws): Known as one of the world’s largest waves, Pe‘ahi is a big-wave surfing mecca. In the early days, legends like Laird Hamilton and his tow-in crew ruled the waves. Then, paddle crews came with their 10-foot guns, paddling into some of the biggest waves in the world. On windy days, world-class windsurfers like Marcilio Browne take windsurfing to another level at Jaws.
The Northshore offers consistent trade winds, making it ideal for wind foiling and kite surfing, which are becoming the new rage. While I’m an average windsurfer, I love getting out at Kanaha when possible. There’s a regular crew there almost every day the wind blows, along with visitors from around the world who come to experience the wind and waves at Kanaha Beach Park.
