Windsurfing and Surfing on Maui’s North Shore:
Maui’s North Shore is a mecca for windsurfers and surfers alike, offering an unparalleled playground of wind and waves. The region’s fame stems from its consistent trade winds, which funnel through the channels between Maui and neighboring islands, creating ideal conditions for windsurfing. During the summer months, the trade winds blow reliably from the northeast, while in winter, the swells from the North Pacific deliver epic surf. When the wind is not blowing, it creates perfect surfing conditions.
Windsurfing:
Windsurfing on Maui’s North Shore is an adrenaline-pumping experience, with Ho’okipa Beach Park as one of the premier destinations. Renowned for its strong winds and powerful waves, Ho’okipa attracts seasoned windsurfers seeking the ultimate thrill. The combination of reliable trade winds, consistent swells, and challenging conditions make it a favorite spot for professionals and amateurs. I have been surfing Hookipa for 50 years, but my windsurfing level takes me to Kanaha Beach, which is more forgiving. I have only been windsurfing for eight years, a late bloomer. I do love to watch the pros windsurfing when the waves get serious.
The famous “Maui Aloha Classic” windsurfing competition held annually at Ho’okipa showcases the talent and skill of windsurfers worldwide. Spectators gather to witness awe-inspiring displays of aerial maneuvers and high-speed rides, solidifying Ho’okipa’s reputation as a windsurfing paradise.
Surfing:
While windsurfing dominates the waters during the summer months, winter heralds the arrival of colossal waves that draw surfers to Maui’s North Shore. Spots like Peahi, also known as “Jaws,” command respect among the surfing community for its massive, barreling waves that challenge even the most seasoned surfers. The thrill of riding these giants has made Jaws a pilgrimage site for big-wave surfers worldwide. Only the most skilled big wave chargers are out at Jaws when it’s breaking. You will find windsurfers out charging the massive waves when the wind kicks in, amazing site to see.
For those seeking a more forgiving surf experience, spots like Ho’okipa and Paia Bay offer excellent options. These breaks cater to surfers of all skill levels, with consistent waves year-round. Always check with the lifeguards to see if it safe to go out., and if in doubt, don’t go out.

Properties in areas like Paia, Haiku, and Kuau appeal to buyers seeking a tranquil lifestyle immersed in Maui’s stunning landscapes. I have been calling Haiku home for 50 years. The popularity of Maui’s North Shore as a tourist destination has drawn interest in vacation rentals—properties in areas like Paia and Kuau cater to visitors seeking an authentic Hawaiian experience. Haiku is also known for vacation rentals, getting out and away from the busier resort areas. My wife and I have a B&B on our property in Haiku. It’s perfect for travelers looking for a different island experience. Getting a license for a B&B is pretty tough these days with the Maui County.

One of the defining features of Maui’s North Shore is its tight-knit community atmosphere. Residents value the laid-back lifestyle, rich cultural heritage, and Aloha spirit permeating the region. Â Places like Mama’s Fish House, an island favorite, to Veg-out in Haiku, love their Works Burritos. On the first weekend of May, Ian Walsh held the 20th Menehune Mayhem surf contest for the kids at Hookipa Beach. Ian and his team do an amazing job with over 150 kids.
