The end of January on Maui we experienced Hugh surf on Maui’s northshore. On the northshore of Maui the surf was closing out places like Hookipa Beach Park with sets breaking way outside the usual surf line up. When the surf is this big on Maui, places like Jaws in Haiku, Maui come alive. Jaws was in the 35ft plus range with clean conditions. So I took a drive down to Jaws, I love it when it gets big. Well I wasn’t disappointed the jet ski’s were out towing the surfers into some bomb waves. The usual crowd was out with Ian Walsh a Maui charger and Laird Hamilton. They were also filming a movie for Point Break II.
The northshore of Maui is home to watermen of all kinds. Windsurfing is really big on Maui with some of the best windsurfers in the world calling Maui home. Another sport that has really taken off is Kiteboarding, if your driving down the coast you will see their kites flying high, and guys ripping up the surf. I been a avid surfer all my life and recently taken up windsurfing. Maui is the perfect place for wind and surfing sports.
