I love upcountry Maui. There are so many different aspects to Makawao and the surrounding area’s. Makawao still offers that country charm.    Upcountry is also horse country.  There are centers in Makawao for English riding and off to the Osakie Rice Arena for rodeo.  On the 4th of July Makawao comes alive.

I love this photo taken by Jimmie Hepp.  This is part of the old dairy in Makawao.  You will still find the old cottages that were once homes for people that worked on the ranch. Notice the flowering trees with the rainbow a very common site in Upcountry Maui.

Makawao town is an old cowboy town. It wasn’t to long ago when cowboys would ride their horse into the local bar for a drink on 4th of July, you gotta love the spirit of these guys.

As your driving along the country side in Makawao and Kula. You will still find horses grazing on the hillside.  If you pay attention you might even find a herd of deer.
